The Annual World Events Around the Globe

Gaze in awe at the sunrise over Angkor Wat; dance in trance with the Junkanoo parade in the Bahamas; follow the trek of a million wildebeest, antelopes and zebras through the Serengeti; or drift along with a thousand fantasy-shaped hot-air balloons over the desert of New Mexico.

Take a look at contents of the book:

Few people have ever seriously wished to be exclusively rational. The good life which most desire is a life warmed by passions and touched with that ceremonial grace which is impossible without some affectionate loyalty to traditional forms and ceremonies.

PARINTINS, Brazil

Parintins
Folklore Festival

Globetrotters in a hurry fly in via Manaus in just over an hour, but with time to spare you can rent a hammock aboard one of the riverboats and marvel at the mangrove swamps and jungle of the world’s largest tropical rainforest as you cruise down the Amazon. It will take 20 – 30 hours to reach the town of Parintins on Tupinambarana Island, depending on the speed of the current. More wonders await you at the end of your magical mystery tour. For three days at the end of June, the town takes sides with the local citizens showing their true colours in the Festival do Boi-Bumbá, as the Parintins Folklore Festival is also called. Only the Carnivals in Rio de Janeiro and Salvador de Bahia attract more spectators. Colourful, often conflicting legends surround the origins of the event. Ranging from the fulfilment of a vow to Saint John the Baptist to the symbolic protest of the poor and underprivileged to sheer plagiarism, they indicate that the celebration developed – initially on a much smaller scale – around the turn of the last century. Today’s epic performances, held in the Bumbódromo arena, are a more recent development and centre on a contest between the red-clad supporters of Boi Garantido and the blue-clad Boi Caprichoso fans, each representing a different district of town.....Read the complete chapter in the book

When my father told me I live in a fantasy land,
I nearly fell off the Little Prince’s planet.

International Balloon Fiesta

“Come fly with me, let’s fly, let’s fly away; / Come fly with me, let’s take off in the blue/ Once I get you up there where the air is rarified/ We’ll just glide, starry-eyed”… Frank Sinatra was not the first to recognise the seductive charms of taking off into the blue empyrean. Ever since the Montgolfier brothers launched the first hot-air balloon near Lyon in 1793, the sport has attracted amateurs and adventurers. Observation balloons were introduced during the American Civil War and World War I; Swedish engineer S.A. Andrée had to abandon an attempt to reach the North Pole by balloon in 1897; and in 1999, Brian Jones and Jacques Piccard, grandson of a famous Swiss balloon pioneer, made the first non-stop circumnavigation of the globe in a balloon. For holidaymakers, a dawn flight floating soundlessly above the vineyards of Napa Valley or across the snowy peaks of the Swiss Alps remains a truly romantic way to start the day....Read the complete chapter in the book

Bring the balloon of the mind
That bellies and drags in the wind

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina

International Tango
Festival & World Cup

The tango is to Buenos Aires what the waltz is to Vienna: the rhythmical expression of the city’s soul. Today both dances conjure up visions of glamour and elegance, as men in tailcoats and women in sleek ball gowns glide across the dance floor. And yet, like the waltz a generation previously, the tango provoked a scandal amongst the Upper Crust when it made its appearance at fashionable soirées in the mansions of Recoleta during the early years of the twentieth century. Blending elements from the West African candomble and the Creole milonga with the tristesa of Spanish flamenco, the tango’s thinly-disguised sexual choreography had developed in the brothels patronised by the city’s lonely foreign immigrants. Early versions had no lyrics, but were accompanied by a small band consisting of guitar, flute and violin. The bandoneon, imported to Argentina from Germany in 1886, added the characteristic plangent melancholy....Read the complete chapter in the book

AYERS ROCK, Australia

Sunset at Uluru

“In all directions stretched the great Australian Emptiness, in which the mind is the least of possessions.” Nobel Laureate Patrick White poignantly summed up the archaic loneliness which characterises the heart and soul of the vast continent. The Red Centre of Australia is the largest sandstone monolith in the world, formed almost 600 million years ago on the ocean floor and now rising above the sandy desert plains some 450 km (280 miles) to the southwest of Alice Springs. Across the millennia the extremes of wind and rain have weathered its feldspar-rich surface, rusting the iron oxides and creating the famous reddish hue. In the harsh glare of the sunlight the colour changes throughout the day, culminating at sunset in glowing shades of scarlet which gradually darken as night falls. Nearby lie the evocative Olgas, the ‘many heads’ collection of rocks also known as Kata Tjuta....Read the complete chapter in the book

In the beginning the Earth was an infinite and murky plain,
separated from the sky and from the grey salt sea
and smothered in a shadowy twilight.

    The Author

    Peter Finkbeiner

Peter Finkbeiner, who grew up in the post-war rubble of Berlin, developed a wanderlust at an early age. His child-star career (in theatre, television and film) had carried him all over Europe before his academic one took him to three continents.

A journalist-photographer-publisher of international magazines and author of city guides and travel books – from The Grand Hotels of Europe to The Islands of the South Seas – Finkbeiner became famous as the creator of the IN World Guide, the esoteric almanac of the most important, beautiful and social places on earth – and the world’s most exclusive and expensive pocketbook. Acclaimed by the world press as “The Beautiful-Life Bible for the Chosen Few” (Esquire), the IN World Guide remains the only guide to the entire world in a single volume.

Finkbeiner’s pleasantly informative, casually critical, tongue-in-cheek style distinguishes his guides from the Baedekers and beyond. Awarded the Prix de l’Excellence Européenne and the honours of the Académie Internationale de la Gastronomie, his Best of The Best series Business & Pleasure brought forth publications on Europe, America and Asia. Finkbeiner’s Places to Be for Lufthansa’s Hon Circle, was the first travel guide specially produced for the airline.

Peter Finkbeiner’s IN WorldGuide is exclusively based on the author’s personal travels and covers everything exclusive of importance, interest and charm in the world’s top cities on all five continents.

Peter Finkbeiner’s world tour is a tale of many cities, his philosophy shared with idol Oscar Wilde: “The secret of life lies in the search for beauty.”

IN World Guide – Business & Pleasure

The essential world travel companion. The ultimate guide for combining Business with Pleasure. The business traveller who shuttles between countries and continents for commerce, conferences and contacts has no time to search for, or research, the place to stay, the place to meet for drinks, lunch or dinner, the place to relax, the most important sights, services and specialities of the city to which he is travelling – frequently for just one or two nights.

IN WorldGuide is the first and only publication to provide all the necessary basic information on the major metropolises throughout the world in a single volume, giving exclusive, first-hand reports on the top cities in all five continents.
